This session was about editing rich media (audio, video, structured data) in a wiki way.

+ wikitravel guy (Evangelo Prodromou) wanted editing of SVG images + interested in open content + mapufacture + inputdraw: free for noncommercial use + hand-illustrated maps may be useful, not to geo scale + Dan: usefulness of having a very particular app (wikitravel)

+ wikitravel use case: collaboratively edited video of a "tour of Montreal"

  • jumpcut (no collaboration)
  • kino: video editing
  • >>http://epresence.tv - open source webcasting conference publishing
  • SMIL: XML answer to realplayer. playlist control editor.
  • IDEA: Just edit the playlists
  • Only valuable for large projects? Documentaries?
  • Many more video producers than talented video editors
  • me: String together YouTube videos?
  • >>http://globalvision.wikia.com/wiki/Video_editing
  • >>http://youtube.com/signup?next=/ytremixer
  • >>http://dotsub.com/ - open subtitling of movies
  • Some movies in the 40s and 50s dropped into public domain
  • There's a guy who dubs old Russian movies in the public domain into Esperanto and sells them to the Esperanto community.
  • HTML wikis (WYSIWYG wikis)
+ tiki diff (post-parsed) works great except for tables, but this was hand-coded + not around yet because "we can get away with it" (i.e. community doesn't demand it)

+ Wiki syntax focuses you on content

  • "Wikis are more than just a bunch of Google docs with links between them"
  • If we don't do WYSIWYG, there will be an end-around run and our culture will be lost
  • If we don't do video editing, there will be an end-around run ...
  • Structured data
+ Wikicalc - Dan Brinklin + Semantic mediawiki - Semantic markup + Freebase + Evan: fields won't change much over time
  • Andreas Gohr: database of available plugins
+ had closed list of fields
